What Turns You Off?

Brought to you exclusively by Dual Mom on
You thought I was going to talk about sex, didn't you?

Nope, I'm talking about blogging. I think most bloggers, as in real life, are drawn to various characteristics in a blog. By the same token we're also turned off by certain characteristics.

I was squandering well paid time at work this week taking a much needed break at work and reading some forums at Blog Frog. SITS has a forum and one of the questions on the forum was what would cause you to not read a blog or stop reading a blog you had been reading. There were 96 responses to the question.

In my effort to be dubbed biggest idiot in the world woman of the year - I read the responses with a fair bit of interest.

It appears the most common reason was music on a blog. Yeah me, I don't have music.

Another was long posts. OK, I'm guilty of this one once in awhile, but I try to keep it within a three minute read.

Run on sentences was another reason bloggers will stop reading. Again, I know my grasp of grammar is not perfect but I usually know how to use a comma and a period.

Lots of bling, badges and gadets seemed to be another pet peeve. I'm too lazy to put this stuff on my blog so I'm ok on this one.

A huge no no with ALOT of people- offensive subject matter and foul language.

Fuck. Actually double fuck because I'm guilty of both.

This got me to thinking about why I blog, what I get out of it, what I hope to impart to those that read my mindless blatherings. And it's this - the world is a fucked up, seriously sad place, if you let it be. Just reading the news on a regular basis makes me want to stab most of society.

I have nothing life altering to say most days. I'm not an expert on any topic. I want to make others chuckle just a little bit. If I accomplish that by relaying the fuckedupedness that is my mind and life, or by giving my spin on a subject matter while turning the air blue around me with profanity, then so be it. It's how I roll.

Having said that, I love new readers. I love seeing a new commentor pop up in my email. I realize I'm probably shutting myself off from alot of bloggers with my cussing. Do I want to do that? No, not really. So I've decided to stop using profanity in my blog posts.

Hehe. Who the fuck am I kidding? Asking me to stop cursing would be like asking a man to remember to pick up his socks. It's just not going to goddamn well happen no matter how hard you scream, rant, rave and threaten to throw said socks in the garbage.

So tell me, is your blog the real you?

I blog like I talk, so yep, my blog is the real me. I don't think I could do it any other way!

Yeah it is, I don;t really care if no-one reads (though it's nice if they do).
My blog changes from frothy & light to deep & meaningful it's however I feel on the day.

I don't try to appeal to an audience

The reason I keep reading someone blog is becasue they are real. I want to hear about real life. That's what I use mine for mostly and I jump all over the board, funny, sad, bitchy, angry, you name it. I can name a handful of blogs I won't read because they don't really talk about shit

If I got more real on my blog I'd probably have to seek legal counseling.

I write like I talk too. And I don't use a lot of colorful language. But that doesnt mean I wouldn't be devestated if you stopped using it! That's who you are and it is funny! Thank f-ing God!!! I love your funny blog because mine is not that funny. Reading your stories is like a mini vacation from the madness that is my household.

Personally, I hate blogs that only have a few sentences and then a link to the rest of the post. That always pisses me off. And I don't understand why some have sucha busy background that I cannot read the words! Other than that--I am good!

Thanks DM! You rock as always!!

Um...yeah. It's all me, all the time. RAW as that might be. I make no apologies for the profanity in my blog. I um...err..well, I was raised better than that, but whatevs. I swear. Not going to post a bunch of Molly Homemaker posts pretending to be something I'm not.

*shrugs*

I love your fucking blog by the way! :D

Oh..and for the record things that turn me off?

The ones that were mentioned do bother me. Posts full of bad spelling irritate the living shit out of me as well. Um...if you can't spell, download Mozilla Firefox and use it as your web browser. It will underline the misspelled words for you in red.

And the other one? People who posts a fucking gazillion times a day. Knock it off already. Collect your thoughts. Put them in a cohesive post. If you come up with another thought. Schedule it to post in the fucking future.

That is all. I am off to get some caffeine.

I would stop reading you if you were to worry about offending other bloggers with your cussing. I mean, it's your blog, write whatever the fuck you want. Ye' old "click off" is always available to those who are offended.

Is my blog the real me? Sunshine and flowers, clean and chipper? That's the good half... the other half rears it's ugly head every so often when I feel the need to vent or rant and drop Fuck in there just to shock my family readers. (Not like they haven't heard that roll off my tongue)

I blog because a) I like to write, and b) if I didn't write down most of what I was thinking, the voices in my head would seriously drive me nuts.

I don't blog because I want fame, or hundreds of readers, or a book deal (that would seriously cut into my blogging time, which is currently completed during my "slacking off at work" time - I just don't see work letting me write a book on their time).

If I feel like using foul language, there's foul language. If my mind is especially chatty, it's a long post. If I forget that I started that sentence twenty minutes ago, fucking suck it up, it'll still be grammatical. Or come back in a few hours when I reread the post and realize how stupid it sounds.

If you (a generic you who might be anal enough to care if I drop the odd curse word) can't handle that, there are a million other bloggers. Go read them.

My blog is absolutely the real me, though I keep a few details to myself (ya know, like my list of mental illnesses).

And my #1 blog turn-off is overt, pushy, and/or condescending religion and/or politics. Say it, don't spray it people.

Um yeah you are too an expert at something. You are an expert at BEING HILARIOUS. Please don't ever change. You are one of my most favorites.

My blog for the most part is the real me, except that I curse WAY more in real life. I try to write with my "filtered" version of obscenities that I use around my brothers.

Other than discussing work and my personal life, my blog IS me, in that it reflects my personality (or at least I hope it does): Snarky, somewhat witty, and generally irritated at most things.

I can't stand these overly romanticized blogs that post "pretty" pictures of things and then have, like, one sentence being like, "aren't these pictures pretty?" I also hate the girls who feel the need to devote an entire blog to how they dress. I mean, I don't need to see your outfit every fucking day.

Your cursing turns me on! It makes me feel like I can connect with you-like you are real and maybe if we were neighbors, we'd be friends. (I think that was one of those run on sentences...)

Anywho...I started blogging because I like to write and I wanted an outlet. It's nice to connect with other people who identify with all the jacked up crap that happens in my life.

I need to know that I'm not the only overweight, over-worked, softball mom on the planet-cause sometimes it feels that way.

I think I lost a follower with my posts on Gay Rights/Day of Silence but I don't care. I'm looking for like minded people to have good conversation with.

Damn it. You lured me in here thinking this post was about sex!

I can not stand musical blogs. Straight up pisses me off. Why? I dont know.! LOL I guess it just annoys me.

My blog is a MUCH nicer version of me. Cause I can hit delete on my blog, where as in real life the stuff that pops out of my mouth is not deletable.

I agree with the music and the LOOOONGG posts. I find that I stop reading someone very quickly with either of those.
I also hate constant negativity.
If you stop cussing, I will stop reading you!! :) Seriously, you are one of my favorite reads because you are real and make me laugh!
I am too much of myself on my blog, which is why I bore the hell out of people. ;)

I don't care if you come to mine. that being said...i feel like we are in high school sometimes and as far as I was concerned back then (last week) I didn't like the girls who told me what kind of socks to wear. I wore MY socks.

I find the music intrusive on all blogs and I have a hard time concentrating with it going. The other thing I dont' like is "your comment will be published after owner approval". WTF? I have no problem with language of any kind, unless it's used as a curse toward someone. I find religious blogs a little tiresome because I'm not a religious woman. I think I write for me, and love it if somebody else is listening. (I also get a little tired sometimes of all politics all the time, whether it be right or left of center.)

Linda, my blog must make you crazy, since I've enacted the comment moderation.

DM, I forgot - poor spelling, incorrect word usage, and posting a million times a day drive me ape shit. The only blog I've ever unfollowed was because of constant word mis-usage. For Christ's sake, if you're going to put your stuff out there, make sure you understand your yours and their/there/they'res.

And I love your blog. Cussing and all.

I don't have music on my blog and I keep my pc volume down all the time anyway so I wouldn't know if someone did have music.

I swear, ALOT, but not every post. And I occasionally have long posts because the subject depicts it.

And if you stop swearing because you're afraid of not getting followers, then you're not being yourself.

Be yourself and your followers will come. They will also go but then you get new ones, so it doesn't really matter.

Wait! I do! You Do! WE ALL DO! Shiiiiit. Seriously though it makes me laugh, snicker, giggle, nod in agreement, helps me release steam, feel close to you....ummm what was the question again? Eh...shut the hell up I was too paying attention.

Yes. For the most part my blog is real. Sometimes I don't post things I want for racial reasons. And by racial reasons I mean because I'm white and I like my face where it is. Some of the shit I encounter daily would not go over well being regurgitated by moi.

I love your blog, especially your foul mouth. Don't ever stop doing what you're doing.
My blog is the real me. The only stuff I leave out is work stuff. That's just for confidentiality reasons. If I could find a way to legally tell my client stories, I would. The mentally ill are a constant source of material.

I swear more on my blog than I do in real life. And honestly? I don't want the kind of readers who would be offended by that because I wouldn't get along with them in real life either. Prudes? Who needs 'em?

But I'm generally the same. I don't get so political (I mean that about my ideals, not my voting preferences) in real life conversations.

I hate music on blogs, partial feeds, and lots of giveaways or reviews.

I love when people are just themselves and they share a bit of their soul online.
Life is life is life and we all do the same crap. I don't want to hear about the small details or how cute people's kids are (they aren't, generally) I want to know about the person behind the mommy/career/student/whatever

My blog is the real me. Though a lot of it is stuff I can't say work (because I'm the only Democrat there) or is about the stupid stuff I did when I was younger that I don't dare talk about in front of my kids (as they don't need the ideas.)

I like to think that my blog is the real me and not the typical wife that others would expect me to be.

As far as what turns me off, definitely hating the music on blogs, especially late at night when I'm the only one up and have about 20 minutes to blog surf before I sneak up to go to bed. Then the blare of some music that I hate and I think that the entire household is awake now and will start bitching at me.

I did a post on this topic, what makes you stop following? and I had more responses to it than to any other post I've done. Pretty hot topic.

My biggest turnoff is reading that some blogger feels complelled to include their religion all over their blog. That will make me hit the back button faster than any blaring music.

I LOVE the swearing and I know you can't stop :)

I sometimes swear, sometimes not I guess it just depends on the topic. But on Wednesday's post, I'm gonna use the word FUCK!

I know my posts can be long...but I talk, ALOT, in real life. It's who I am. But this bullshit about the fucking bad language....they can kiss my ass and not read. I have to watch my P's and Q's all the damn day at work with the teens I teach and TRY to watch the lanuguage in front of my own Macs. It has to come out somewhere. That would be MY blog. :) The End.

Ah, if we spent our entire lives trying to make people like us we'd all be the most damn miserable folks everywhere. If you can just be yourself it's an awful easy way to surround yourself with people that actually like you and not narcissistic asses that force ya to walk on egg shells.

But then again, that's from an overly opinionated ass hat like myself who has the blog so I don't have to tiptoe around the world.

plus, i loves the peeps that my blog drags in so i ain't worrying about the ones it offends with my cussing

As far as I'm concerned, if my posts offend you, then you aren't my intended audience anyway. My blog is absolutely the real me...well, to a degree. There are some thoughts and feelings that I have typed out and then erased because my blog address is linked on my facebook page, and I have TONS of family on facebook...so I do leave out the most *inflammatory* of my opinions and thoughts, but I don't constrain my sailor mouth to any extent whatsoever. I definitely try to cut back on some of the negativity, especially when I'm depressed.

My blog is mostly the real me, but in real life I curse more. I try to tone it down b/c I have an audience that includes people who might be a bit offended. In real life I also complain about my in-laws quite a bit. But can't do that on my blog. Sads.

I agree with you on the music and long posts....and too much bling. I like to keep my page pretty simple/quiet and I don't "do" buttons. TOo much on the sidebar is distracting!

Sure I go by secret names, but some douche bag was stalking me not in a good way, so I went all incogneto on blogville.

But it's still me. Every shitin' swear word. Speaking of swear words.

Not kidding when I tell you this, you had made up a word, and usually I get them right away, or know them, or use them daily. But the "Fuckedupedness" was awesome. you had me sitting at my desk s.l.o.w.l.y spelling it out.

Love it. And my pet peve on blogs? The first thing I see is religion. I almost bolt at the sign of someone with their love of god plastered in their headder.

That is why I don't diguss religion, or politics on my blog!

Geez I miss you. I'm rambling here like I'm holding a fucking conversation.
