Week Three Weigh In

Brought to you exclusively by Dual Mom on
*Sigh*

As many of you know, I’ve lost weight before, quite a bit of weight, going from a size 14 down to a size 5. I know how to do this. I know what works and what doesn’t work for my body.

So the following synopsis was cut and pasted from myfitnesspal food and exercise diary.

DualMom completed her food and exercise diary for 01/24/2010 and was under her calorie goal
DualMom completed her food and exercise diary for 01/23/2010 and was under her calorie goal
DualMom completed her food and exercise diary for 01/21/2010 and was under her calorie goal
DualMom completed her food and exercise diary for 01/18/2010 and was under her calorie goal
DualMom completed her food and exercise diary for 01/17/2010 and was under her calorie goal

Ok, got that?

Here is the exercise I did last week.

Monday – 1hr cardio, 35 minutes weights
Tuesday – no exercise
Wednesday – 1 hr cardio
Thursday – 1 hr Yoga class, 1 hr cardio
Friday – no Exercise
Saturday – 1 hr 10 min cardio, 45 minutes stretching/weights
Sunday – 45 mins cardio

That’s a total of 4 hrs 45 minutes of cardio and 2 hrs 20 mins of yoga/weights. So tell me, how in the sweet flippin name of all that is holy, I gained a pound last week? I have not eaten a fucking cookie, a french fry, a burger; nothing that could be considered “cheating” has passed these lips. I can't even believe that I've become one of THOSE people. You know the ones I mean, the people that go on and on about how they can't lose weight no matter how hard they try and all the while you're thinking to yourself, "Yeah, removing the cheeseburger from your fat trap might be a start."

I did drink on Friday night but even with that the scale should not be reading what its reading. When the fitness pal says I’m under my calorie goal….it’s usually on average by about 500 calories. No, I’m not starving myself. I’m eating about 1200 – 1300 calories a day, but I’m burning close to 600 calories on the days I exercise. And yes I’m fucking drowning myself with 4563 million glasses of water a day.

I’m pissed. Pissed is an understatement.

As I sat trying to reassemble the pieces of my scale last evening, I thought of something. Could it be because I’m getting older? “They” (whoever the fuck they are) say that as you age, losing weight becomes increasingly difficult. Am I destined to remain fat because I’m getting older? You know what I say to that notion?

Suck my arse AGE! There’s no way in flying fucking hell that’s gonna happen I’ll tell you that right now.

Since I’m all about the scientific experiments, I need you to help me. I need to figure out if my increasing age is indeed playing a role in my fantastical failure increasing difficulty losing weight. Then I'll know that I just have to work my aging ass a little bit harder. So, I need you to tell me how old you are and how much weight you’ve lost so far. If you don’t want to post your age, email me at dualmomatgmail.com Please help a girl out. Otherwise I fear for my sanity, the lives of my children, and really just anyone who comes in contact with me today. The proper thing to do would be to post a warning around my neck:

"Fat, aging chick, sweating her arse off and not losing weight...proceed at your own risk"

I'll accumulate the data and post my findings. You know... the highly scientific, accurate results of my highly scientific experiment.

Sadly, I think it is the aging thing. I'm having the same problem losing weight although I'm doing everything *right*. And I'll be turing the big 4-0 in a couple months.

I swear, every little teeny-tiny morsel of anything that could be considered cheating in the least takes a week to burn off, so how in the F are we supposed to lose? I want to be skinny AND happy, dammit!

Yeah, 38 and I've lost *NOTHING*. I'm beginning to be thankful that the scale's not moving the other way.

If you're doing the weight training, it could always be that you're gaining more muscle. I've been gaining rather than losing over the past two or three weeks, too. I'd contribute it to the weight training and workouts and keep right on moving.

I'm going with the line of thinking that its totally because I didn't shave BEFORE I stepped on the scale....hmmmm? Ya think???

Maybe it is that new muscle from the weight training - that's very real.

Maybe you should write a lovely Snarktastic Thank You note to your scale :O)

Read Jillian Michael's Mastering your Metabolism. It changed my life. So worth it.

Oh I'm so feeling your pain this week. I can feel it this week on me & it is precisely why I am not stepping on the scale this week. I.Just.Can't. Honestly I would be a bag of emotions between p*ssed off and crushed with sadness.

We both can do this I know we can. We just have to keep going.

*I will ask you a question* How many calories are you taking in? Are you going to light on calories especially since you are working out more? Because that can sometimes throw your body into slowing the metabolism down... Just a thought I know I can be bad about that myself.

I agree. Do you have a scale which weighs fat vs. muscle? I had a training for awhile and when I was gaining or not losing weight on the scale, the other scale was showing that I was losing fat and gaining muscle.

Also, if you are training hard, my trainer said you should be eating 1500 calories or your body will think it's starving and hang on to your weight.

I just suggest these based upon my trainer and my experience...I'm not an expert.

I agree with everyone that you are probably gaining muscle. Maybe you should try taking your measurements, it might be more reassuring than the scale.

I'm 31 and I've lost 3 lbs. I lost 25 last fall so I'm hoping the weight loss gets a moving a little faster as I am also feeling a little disappointed.

For your highly scientific study: 30, 3 weeks, total -4.4lbs.

From your past post, it looks like you have lost the same. Eat more? Eat more often? Stop eating 2 hours before bed? Plateau?

I have no idea what the right answer is, but it sounds to me like you are doing a great job.

i tried not to laugh at this post because it's funny but it's not...

i am 30 and if i did what you did, i doubt i would have gained a pound. last year i lost like 12 pounds in a month or so by walk/jogging on the treadmill for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. that's it. i didn't really cut back on eating, just stopped eating as much junk. i definitely had a cookie or five though...

{{{{{{{HUG}}}}}}}

It'll happen. Alcohol might have you retaining water Dual Mom. You drank enough to dehydrate yourself and your body holds on to all the water it can after that for a few days!!

Just sayin'

I find that when I stop worrying about what the scale says, I lose. Stop stessing about it, girl! Relax, get a little more sleep and continue your regimine for the health factors. Not the weight loss. That's only bonus.

Oh Man I feel your frustration!! But ya know what? Have you thought that maybe you are not eating enough? You are under your alotted calories, so maybe your body is hanging onto everything cuz it's afraid you aren't going to give it anymore...maybe?? I've heard that before...like with WW...if you are way under points then you won't lose....
Think positive!! This CAN be done...you are not OLD!

I also vote for gaining muscle? Or maybe you need to eat fewer carbs? lol More bacon? My sister is in her 40's and has had such low metabolism they had her on some kind of hormone cream for awhile (that didn't work), but she went on a low carb diet and has lost a ton of weight. So I don't know if age has much to do with it? Maybe it's the cold weather? Our bodies need to hang on the fat to insulate us against the cold?

I vote for gining muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat, so as you gain muscle and lose fat the numbers on the scale might actually go up.

Are you feeling more toned and are your clothes fitting better? If so I'm voting for muscle too. But I also wonder if you are not eating enough. Your body will retain every ounce of fat if it thinks it is starving.

Don't rely just on scales to measure your progress. They lie! Use a site like this http://www.freeweightloss.com/calculator1.html to work out your body fat percentage. Multiply that by your actual weight and you will find out how much fat your body has. Do this each week while following your diet and exercise plan and watch the fat weight drop. Much more motivating than just measuring with scales!

Just had to pipe in because I know how hard it is to feel like you are getting anywhere if you just use the scale to determine how you are progressing. You are getting a good variety of workout and I'd bet good money you are just building muscle, but that is a good thing because muscle burns waaaaaaaaay more fat. Find you via Stir Fry. I always like it when I get a good blog for my roll. :) Keep up the good work. I'm about to head to the gym myself in a few.

56 and yes it is very hard to lose weight the older you get!!! I have only lost around 3 pounds and yes I cheated and yes I am not working out that much but I am hungry all the time. I am so mad at myself for gaining this weight back. Once I lose this ....I am never gaining it back. I am a Lose it Bitch!! It's hard!!!!

Oh honey..it could be any number of things. It could be age, water retention, muscle gain, not shaving the fuzz off your legs. But I realise it sucks.

Since you asked, I'm 30 and in the few weeks we've been doing this, I've lost 9.9 lbs. I've always found it comes off quickly at first for me. I have a job that has me on my feet, moving around all day, plus two little ones. But beyond that, I dunno.

Next week will be different for you!

Age 31.5.
Height 5'1/2"
Weight 136.5
Goal weight 107

Routine? None. Trying to do WW point system now. NEED to start working out. So that whole yipiee I lost 3 lbs, well I'm back up two.

Now I'm freaking about my age, thinking I need to get skinny and stay skinny, because if I age at this weight I will be one bitter sarcastic bitch forever. (which may not be a bad thing. I just want to be a sarcastic bitch, minus the bitter part)

We are the same age, and I think I'm at 3 lbs (need to steal scale tomorrow). But you are working out a hell of a lot more than me, so I too will vote that it's muscle mass not weight gain. Maybe try and see what your measurements are instead of a scale?
